Early Life and Education of Bhagat Singh

Bhagat Singh was born to Kishan Singh and Vidyawati, on September 27, 1907, in Lyallpur village, western Punjab, 150 kilometres from Lahore.

As his family was actively involved in progressive politics, Bhagat Singh too became active in India’s freedom struggle. Bhagat’s great-grandfather had fought against the British in the Anglo-Sikh war. Bhagat’s father Kishan Singh was a Congress leader and had been in jail several times.

Bhagat’s uncle Ajit Singh left the nation when he was two years of age. Ajit Singh was a progressive thinker. He formed a revolutionary organisation “The Bharatmata Society“, and launched a Book Agency, which distributed anti-government writing.

Education: Initially went to a village school in Banga for a few years, Bhagat Singh was enrolled in the Dayanand Anglo-Vedic School in Lahore. At the age of thirteen in 1923, he joined the National College in Lahore which was founded by Lala Lajpat Rai.

Bhagat Singh’s Activities to Freedom Struggle

Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA): Bhagat joined this gathering of similar young revolutionaries who trusted in using force to overthrow British rule and bring freedom to India.

In 1926, Bhagat established the Naujawan Bharat Sabha to encourage workers and peasants to fight for freedom and independence against the Britishers.

In December 1928, Singh, along with Sukhdev and Rajguru, planned to avenge the death of freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai and plotted to assassinate the Superintendent of Police James Scott in Lahore. They killed J.P. Saunders by mistake, and this incident became known as the Lahore Conspiracy case.

Central Assembly Bombing Case

On April 8, 1929, Bhagat and B.K. Dutt threw a bomb in the Central Legislative Assembly and shouted slogans `Inquilab Zindabadand and Samrajya ka nash ho’’ to protest the passage of two oppressive laws, the Public Safety Bill and the Trade Dispute Bill.

The aim of throwing a bomb at the Central Legislative Assembly was not to kill anyone but rather to make the deaf hear and to remind the foreign government of its callous exploitation.
They also threw pamphlets into the crowd and willingly surrendered.

While in prison, Bhagat and his fellow prisoners went on a hunger strike to demand better treatment and rights for political detainees.
