Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is a prominent Indian politician from the influential Nehru-Gandhi family. She is the daughter of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and former Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Early Life and Education of Priyanka Gandhi

Priyanka Gandhi was born in Delhi on 12 January 1972 to Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, and she is the youngest of their two children. Her older brother Rahul Gandhi is a member of Parliament from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh and the 12th Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha. She is the granddaughter of Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, and Feroze Gandhi, a freedom fighter and politician. She is also the great-granddaughter of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Priyanka attended Welham Girls’ School in Dehradun until 1984, after which both Rahul and Priyanka were moved to day schools in Delhi due to security reasons. Following the assassination of Indira Gandhi, due to constant terror threats, she and her brother Rahul were both home-schooled. Later, she joined the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Delhi, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Jesus and Mary College, University of Delhi, and a master’s degree in Buddhist Studies in 2010.

Personal Life of Priyanka Gandhi:

In 1997, Gandhi married Robert Vadra, a Delhi-based businessman, and started using the name Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The couple has two children, namely Rehan and Miraya.

After marriage, Priyanka converted to Buddhism. She follows Buddhist philosophy and is a practitioner of Vipassana.

Political Life of Priyanka Gandhi

Priyanka Gandhi became active in politics in January 2019, and she is popular in the Amethi and Raebareli constituencies. In 2004, she managed her mother’s campaign in the Uttar Pradesh assembly election. Additionally, she assisted the Congress Party in securing 10 seats in the Amethi-Raebareli region during the 2007 Uttar Pradesh assembly election. On 23rd January 2019, she was appointed as the General Secretary of the Congress Party in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

In January 2022, Priyanka, along with her brother Rahul Gandhi, launched the Congress’s manifesto for the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election. The manifesto focused on youth and women empowerment, state development, and promised 40% of tickets to women for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.

Emphasizing women empowerment and participation in politics, she initiated the “Ladki hoon, Lad Sakti hoon” campaign in the state. On International Women’s Day, she organized a rally in the state’s capital Lucknow, which saw participation from women across the state and was marked by several promises and hopes.

Despite her efforts to revive the party in Uttar Pradesh and bring reforms to the state’s politics, the Congress Party faced defeat in the assembly elections, winning only 2 out of the 403 assembly seats.

After extensively campaigning for the Congress during the 2024 Indian general election and taking on a more organizational role within the party, Gandhi announced that she would join electoral politics and contest as the party’s candidate for the Wayanad bypoll to succeed her brother, Rahul.
