Bhopal City
Bhopal, the capital city of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, is a wonderful place known as the City of Lakes due to its beautiful natural and artificial lakes. It’s also one of India’s greenest and 16th largest cities. Bhopal has a rich history, having been the capital of the former Bhopal State, a princely state ruled by the Nawabs of Bhopal until India’s independence in 1947.
History of Bhopal
The city of Bhopal was constructed on the site of Bhojpal, an 11th-century metropolis named after Parmara King Bhoj (1000-1055). Bhopal was originally called Bhopal, after Bhoj and the dam (‘pal’) that he claimed to have built to create the lakes that surround Bhopal.
Dost Mohammed Khan, one of Emperor Aurangzeb’s Afghan warriors, created Bhopal after the chaos that followed Aurangzeb’s death in 1707 and established his little empire there. The kingdom endured multiple conflicts before becoming a princely state in British India in 1818.
The Begums, a 19th-century Muslim women’s dynasty, ruled over Bhopal during its cultural and architectural apex. Mamola Bai (1744–95) reigned for 50 years from ‘behind the veil’ (purdah) on behalf of her late husband’s incompetent sons. Following her husband’s killing, Qudsia Begum (1819–37) assumed authority and prepared her daughter Sikander to rule, laying the groundwork for Bhopal’s golden period.
Sikander Begum (1844-68) was an enlightened modernist and reformer most recognized for her administrative, social, and educational changes. During the Indian insurrection of 1857, she supported the British and established Bhopal as a center for scholarship, culture, and the arts.
Shah Jahan Begum (1868-1901) loved architecture and invested substantially in public works to beautify the city. Sultan Jahan Begum, Shah Jahan Begum’s daughter, advanced women’s freedom while also establishing a sophisticated municipal government.
The city was constituted as a municipality in 1903. At India’s independence in 1947, it remained a separate province until 1949, when it acceded to India. 1952 the Nawab’s absolute rule was abolished, and a chief commissioner’s state was established. It merged with Madhya Pradesh in 1956, and Bhopal replaced Nagpur as the state capital.
