Chennai City
Chennai, which was previously known as Madras, is the capital of Tamil Nadu and one of the major metropolitan cities in India. Nestled along the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, Madras is a vibrant city that embraces its rich history, diverse culture, thriving economy, and beautiful beaches.
History of Chennai
Madras has a fascinating history that spans over 400 years. In 1639, the British East India Company, led by Francis Day, acquired a small piece of land from the Vijayanagara Empire to establish a trading post, laying the foundation for Fort St. George, the first major British settlement in India. Over time, Chennai evolved into a prominent port and administrative centre under British rule and played a crucial role in India’s independence movement.
Before British rule, Madras was home to influential dynasties such as the Cholas, Pallavas, and Pandyas, whose legacy is still evident in the city’s magnificent temples and cultural landmarks.
Culture of Chennai
The City is celebrated as the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu, renowned for its classical music, dance, and art. The city is synonymous with Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam, traditional art forms that enjoy global recognition. Each December, the Chennai Music Season attracts artists and enthusiasts from all over the world to experience the magic of Carnatic music.
The people of Madras take immense pride in their Tamil heritage, with the Tamil language forming an integral part of the city’s identity and boasting a rich literary heritage that spans millennia. Festivals like Pongal, a harvest festival, are embraced with great enthusiasm, reflecting the deep agrarian roots of Tamil culture.
In addition to classical arts, Madras is the proud home of the Kollywood film industry, which has a significant influence on the city’s lifestyle, fashion, and even politics.
